Gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate in joints, causing inflammation and intense pain. – Mayoclinic.org
Under normal circumstances, the body dissolves uric acid and removes it via the kidneys and urination.
Normally, uric acid is dissolved in the bloodstream and then removed by our kidneys. However, when there is an imbalance, a build-up of urate crystals accumulates in the joints causing inflammation and pain. When this condition occurs, it is wise to eat foods that are low in purine. (The body breaks down purine, during digestion, and forms uric acid.)
Foods that seem to lower uric acid:
Black Cherries, Cherry juice, Lemon juice (also Natural Lemonade and Lemon Water), and Grapefruit.
Naturally Anti-inflammatory:
Turmeric (I take one 500 mg capsule daily), Red Pepper (Cayenne), and Tomatoes*
Vegetables low in purines:
Cabbage, Squash, Red Bell Pepper, Beetroots, Broccoli,
Foods to avoid or monitor: (Gout Triggers and/or high in purines)
Red Meats; Fried Foods, Tuna, Trout ... also shell fish
Green Peas, Raw Spinach, Cauliflower,
High-Fructose Corn Syrup and Artificial Sweeteners
Alcohol: Beer and Distilled Liquors
*Tomatoes are tricky. They trigger gout attacks in some people and reduce inflammation in others.
