Many people don't realize that vegetables (and fruits) have protein. Therefore, meat and fish are often the main source of protein in the average diet. The "food pyramid", generally taught in school, shows meat, fish, beans, and dairy products in a group together. It used to be CALLED the Protein Group. It is probably now just implied.
However, there are several vegetables that are high in proteins. When incorporated properly into a vegetarian diet they can supply all the protein that is needed.
After all, several animals that are eaten for protein are, in fact, vegetarian themselves.
